Saras Baug grew up around a small temple of Ganesh that Sawai Madhavrao Peshwa built in 1784 on an island in an artificial lake below Parvati Hill. The lake later dried up and the Pune Municipal Corporation turned the area into a 25 acre garden in the 1960s, but the shrine is still called Talyatla Ganpati, the Ganpati of the lake. Families come in the evening for darshan, a walk on the lawns and the snack stalls just outside the gates, and the temple is busiest on Sankashti Chaturthi and during Ganeshotsav. Parvati Hill is a short walk south.
