The Rajiv Gandhi Zoological Park, known to everyone as Katraj Zoo, is run by the Pune Municipal Corporation on about 130 acres at the southern edge of the city, around the 42 acre Katraj Lake. It opened in 1999 and has three parts: the zoo itself, an animal orphanage and the snake park, which began as the Katraj Snake Park. Around 60 species are on show, focusing on animals of the Western Ghats and the Deccan, including tigers, leopards, sloth bears, elephants, deer and many snakes. Battery cars run around the park for those who would rather not walk it all.
