Purandar stands about 40 km south east of Pune, near Saswad, with its twin fort Vajragad on a neighbouring hill. Shivaji's son Sambhaji was born here in 1657, and in 1665 Shivaji signed the Treaty of Purandar with the Mughal general Jai Singh, handing over 23 forts. The fort has a lower terrace, or machi, with a church built in the British period and a temple of Purandareshwar, and an upper citadel. The fort is inside an army area, so carry photo ID; entry rules and timings can change, and photography is restricted in places.
