Pataleshwar is an 8th century rock cut temple from the Rashtrakuta period, carved down into a single basalt outcrop on what is now Jangali Maharaj Road. The main cave has a pillared hall with three sanctums, and Shiva is still worshipped in the central shrine. In front stands a circular Nandi mandapa held up by square pillars, also carved from the living rock. The excavation was never finished, and parts show weathering and old damage, but the garden around it makes a quiet break from the traffic outside. It is a protected monument looked after by the Archaeological Survey of India.
