Ohel David Synagogue (Lal Deval)

Ohel David Synagogue (Lal Deval)

Red brick Gothic synagogue in Camp, built in 1867 with funds from David Sassoon and known locally as Lal Deval, the red temple.

Ohel David Synagogue was built in 1867 with funds from the Baghdadi Jewish merchant and philanthropist David Sassoon, and its red brick walls earned it the local name Lal Deval, the red temple. The tall clock tower and Gothic revival windows make it one of the most striking buildings in the Camp area. The tomb of David Sassoon, who died in Pune in 1864, stands in the grounds. It is still an active synagogue, so visits depend on permission and security checks at the gate; carry photo ID and dress modestly.
