Mahatma Phule Wada

Mahatma Phule Wada

Home of social reformers Jyotirao and Savitribai Phule, who opened girls' schools in Pune, now a memorial and small museum.

Jyotirao Phule and Savitribai Phule lived in this modest house in Ganj Peth, now renamed Mahatma Phule Peth. From Pune the couple campaigned against caste discrimination and for the education of women and girls, and in 1848 they opened one of the first schools for girls in India run by Indians. The house is kept as a memorial, with a museum of photographs, documents and paintings about their work, and statues of the couple stand in the garden. Visits are short, about half an hour, and quiet.
