Shinde Chhatri at Wanowrie marks the spot where Mahadji Shinde, the Maratha general who commanded the Peshwas' armies, was cremated in 1794. In that year the site had only a Shiva temple, which Mahadji himself had built. His descendants, the Scindias of Gwalior, later added the memorial: a samadhi was raised outside the sanctum in 1910, and Maharaja Madho Rao Scindia commissioned the present complex. The building is richly carved in stone, with Rajasthani style detailing, stained glass and portraits of the Shinde family inside. It is maintained by the Shinde Devasthan Trust of Gwalior.
