Lenyadri (Girijatmaj Ganpati Caves)

Lenyadri (Girijatmaj Ganpati Caves)

Buddhist rock cut caves of the 1st to 3rd century above Junnar, one of which holds the Girijatmaj Ganesh, an Ashtavinayak temple.

Lenyadri is a group of about 30 Buddhist rock cut caves in a cliff about 5 km north of Junnar, dating from the 1st to the 3rd century AD. Most are viharas, or monks' dwellings, with two chaitya halls among them. Cave 7, originally a vihara, was later adapted for Hindu worship and now holds the Girijatmaj Ganesh, one of the eight Ashtavinayak, so the site is both a protected monument and a busy temple. A long flight of steps leads up the hillside to the caves. Carry water, and watch out for monkeys.
