Lal Mahal

Lal Mahal, the Red Palace, stands on the site of the house that Shahaji Bhosale built around 1630 for his wife Jijabai and their young son Shivaji, who spent part of his childhood here. In 1663 it was the scene of Shivaji's daring night raid on the Mughal general Shaista Khan, who had occupied the palace. The original building did not survive; the present red brick building was put up by the Pune Municipal Corporation in 1988 as a memorial on the old site. Inside are oil paintings of episodes from Shivaji's life, and a statue of Jijabai with young Shivaji stands in the garden. It is a short walk from Shaniwar Wada and Kasba Ganpati.
