Sultan Muhammed Shah Aga Khan III built this palace on the Nagar Road in 1892, partly to give work to people in the villages around Pune who had been hit by famine. After the Quit India resolution of August 1942, the British held Mahatma Gandhi, Kasturba Gandhi, his secretary Mahadev Desai and Sarojini Naidu here. Mahadev Desai died at the palace in 1942 and Kasturba in 1944, and their samadhis stand in the garden. The rooms now hold a museum run by the Gandhi National Memorial Society, with photographs, letters and personal belongings from those years, and a khadi shop near the entrance. The palace, with its long arched verandahs, sits in large lawns, and the Archaeological Survey of India declared it a monument of national importance in 2003.
