Punakha Dzong against the forested hills of the valley.
Punakha Dzong, the palace of great happiness, was built in 1637 to 1638 by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal and is the second oldest and second largest dzong in Bhutan. It was the seat of government until the capital moved to Thimphu, and Bhutan's kings have been crowned here since 1907. It is still the winter home of the Je Khenpo and the central monk body. A covered wooden cantilever bridge crosses the Mo Chhu to the entrance, and purple jacaranda trees bloom in the courtyard area in spring. Wear long sleeves and formal, modest clothing.
