Established on 23 September 1887, the University of Allahabad is the fourth oldest modern university in India and is widely known as the Oxford of the East. Its origins lie in Muir Central College, whose main building was designed by Sir William Emerson in a grand Indo-Saracenic style. The university has produced two Presidents of India, two Prime Ministers, and generations of civil servants, judges, and writers, making its campus a significant heritage destination as well as an active centre of learning.
