Sri Aurobindo Ashram was founded in 1926 by Sri Aurobindo, the philosopher, poet, and independence activist who turned to spiritual philosophy after retiring from politics, and Mirra Alfassa, known as The Mother. The ashram is the primary centre of Integral Yoga, the spiritual practice developed by Sri Aurobindo that seeks to transform all aspects of human life. At the heart of the main ashram building on rue de la Marine lies the Samadhi, the flower-covered tomb of Sri Aurobindo and The Mother, which is visited by thousands of pilgrims and seekers daily. The ashram runs a school, a publishing house, a library, guest houses, and various industries. The atmosphere in the main courtyard is one of deep stillness and is open to visitors of all backgrounds.
