Promenade Beach

The iconic 1.5 km seafront of Pondicherry lined with the French War Memorial, statue of Gandhi, old lighthouse, and bustling beach cafes along the Bay of Bengal.

Promenade Beach, also known as Rock Beach, is the defining public space of Pondicherry and one of the most photographed seafronts in South India. The 1.5 km stretch of coastline along Goubert Avenue is lined with tetrapod breakwaters, heritage buildings, cafes, and landmarks including the statue of Mahatma Gandhi, the French War Memorial, and the old lighthouse. The promenade is at its best in the early morning when locals jog and walk along the seafront, and at sunset when it fills with visitors. Being a rocky coastline the beach is not ideal for swimming but the atmosphere, the view of the Bay of Bengal, and the surrounding French Quarter streets make it one of the most enjoyable urban beaches in India.
