The Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Jesus is the most architecturally striking church in Pondicherry and the only basilica in the union territory. Built by French missionaries in the 19th century and elevated to basilica status, the structure is a fine example of Gothic Revival architecture with a tall spire, pointed arches, and an extraordinarily beautiful set of stained glass windows that flood the interior with coloured light. The windows depict scenes from the life of Christ and the history of the Church. The basilica is located on the south boulevard and is an active place of worship for Pondicherry's Catholic community. It is particularly beautiful during mass when light from the windows transforms the interior.
