Phewa Lake

Phewa Lake

Pokhara's big lake, with Machhapuchhre reflected on calm mornings.

Phewa Lake is the second largest lake in Nepal, about 5.7 sq km, and the reason Pokhara's Lakeside area exists. On still mornings the snow peak of Machhapuchhre shows in the water. Painted wooden rowing boats can be hired by the hour from the Lakeside shore, with or without a boatman, and most people row out to the Tal Barahi island temple or across to the trail up to the World Peace Pagoda. The forested south shore is quieter than the hotel side. Life jackets are provided with boats; ask if they are not offered.
