Sangachoeling Monastery

A 17th century hilltop monastery reached by trek, among Sikkim's oldest surviving Buddhist sites.

Sangachoeling Monastery was founded around the same time as Pemayangtse by Lama Lhatsun Chempo, a key figure in spreading Buddhism through Sikkim. Reaching it requires a walk uphill from the road, rewarded with colourful murals, aged clay statues, and sweeping valley views. Only men are permitted inside the inner sanctum, and access there is limited further to local Bhutia and Lepcha community members.
