Helical Stepwell

A distinctive spiral stepwell within the Champaner-Pavagadh Archaeological Park, unusual for its helical design.

The Helical Stepwell is one of the more unusual structures within the Champaner-Pavagadh Archaeological Park, built with a spiralling staircase descending toward the water rather than the straight flights common to most Gujarat stepwells. The design allowed access to water at multiple levels as the level dropped through the year, a practical solution suited to the region's seasonal rainfall. Though smaller and less visited than the mosques nearby, the stepwell is worth seeking out for anyone interested in the engineering side of Champaner's heritage.
