Golghar

A massive beehive-shaped granary built by the British in 1786 in Patna, offering panoramic views of the city from its top.

Golghar, built in 1786 by Captain John Garstin, is a massive granary in Patna designed to store grain for the British Army to prevent famines. The structure stands 29 meters high and features a unique beehive-shaped architecture with walls that are 3.6 meters thick at the base. A spiral staircase of 145 steps leads to the top, offering panoramic views of the city and the Ganges River. Despite its original purpose, Golghar was never filled to capacity due to design flaws in its doors. Today, it stands as a testament to colonial architecture and engineering, serving as a popular tourist attraction and a symbol of Patna's historical significance during the British era.
