Rinpung Dzong above the Paro valley.
Rinpung Dzong, the fortress on a heap of jewels, stands on the hillside above the Paro Chhu. It houses the district's monastic body and government offices, with courtyards, painted galleries and temples inside. The traditional covered wooden bridge below, Nyamai Zam, is the usual way up. The dzong is the setting for the Paro Tshechu festival in spring, when a giant thangka is unrolled before dawn on the final day. Wear long sleeves and formal, modest clothing.
