Kyichu Lhakhang

Kyichu Lhakhang

One of Bhutan's oldest temples, traditionally dated to the 7th century.

Kyichu Lhakhang and its chorten in the Paro valley.

Kyichu Lhakhang is said to have been founded in the 7th century by the Tibetan king Songtsen Gampo, as one of a set of temples built to pin down a demoness across the Himalaya. The older inner shrine holds a revered statue of Jowo Sakyamuni, and a second temple was added in the 20th century. Elderly pilgrims walk around it and turn the prayer wheels all day. The orange trees in the courtyard are said to bear fruit through the year. It is a short, calm visit and an easy stop on the way to or from Taktsang.
