Drukgyel Dzong on its ridge in the upper Paro valley.
Drukgyel Dzong, the fortress of the victorious Drukpa, was built in 1649 to mark victory over invading Tibetan forces and to guard the old trade route to Tibet. It was badly damaged by fire in 1951 and stood as a ruin for decades before a long reconstruction. On a clear day Jomolhari can be seen from nearby. It is at the end of the road up the Paro valley and pairs easily with the Taktsang hike.
