Goa State Museum in the Patto area of Panjim is the most comprehensive museum in the state, occupying the former Secretariat building near the Adil Shah Palace. Eight galleries display a wide range of material: pre-historic artefacts, Hindu sculpture, coins and bronzes, Christian art including carved ivory and wooden altars removed from suppressed churches, manuscripts, natural history specimens and a notable collection of portraits of the Governors of Portuguese Goa. The museum provides the historical context for understanding Goa's layered cultural identity.
