Dr Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary

A mangrove bird sanctuary on Chorão Island accessible by ferry, named for India's most celebrated ornithologist.

Dr Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary occupies the western tip of Chorão Island in the Mandovi estuary, reached by ferry from Ribander near Panjim. Named after India's pre-eminent ornithologist, the sanctuary protects a rich mangrove ecosystem that shelters both resident and migratory birds including kingfishers, herons, egrets, purple moorhens and occasional sea eagles. Guided boat tours wind through the mangrove channels for close observation. Early morning is most rewarding and the trip by ferry across the river is itself a tranquil experience.
