Basilica of Bom Jesus in Old Goa, 9 km from Panjim, is the finest Baroque church in Asia and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Built between 1594 and 1605, its laterite and granite facade features intricate Corinthian, Doric and Composite pilaster orders. The interior contains the spectacular gilded altar of St Ignatius Loyola and, in a side chapel, the elaborately carved marble tomb of St Francis Xavier surmounted by a silver casket holding his incorrupt body. The remains are exposed to the public every ten years during the Exposition, the next scheduled for 2034.
