Vishnupad Temple on the bank of the Bhima River near the main complex enshrines a rock bearing what devotees believe to be the lotus footprints of Lord Vishnu, along with hoof prints of the cows and calves that accompanied him. The open mandap structure is supported by sixteen intricately carved pillars depicting Vishnu and Krishna in multiple postures. Pilgrims who cannot travel to the Vishnupad Temple in Gaya regard this shrine as equally meritorious. The natural lighting through the open hall and the sparrows that nest in hundreds in the roof beams give the temple a distinctive character.
