Pundalik Temple on the banks of the Chandrabhaga, 500 metres from the main Vitthal temple, is dedicated to Bhakta Pundalik, the semi-legendary devotee credited with bringing Vithoba to Pandharpur. According to tradition, Pundalik was so absorbed in serving his parents that when Lord Krishna himself arrived, he asked him to wait and tossed a brick for the Lord to stand on. Moved by this act of filial devotion, Vithoba chose to remain in Pandharpur. The five-storeyed temple with a pagoda spire stands directly by the river and is an obligatory stop for every pilgrim completing the Pandharpur circuit.
