Chandrabhaga Ghat

The sacred crescent-shaped ghats on the Bhima River where pilgrims take the mandatory holy dip before temple darshan.

Chandrabhaga Ghat is the collective name for the twelve ghats lining the Bhima River as it curves in a crescent shape through Pandharpur, giving the river its local name Chandrabhaga. A ritual bath here before entering the Vitthal temple is considered an essential act of purification for every pilgrim. The Mahadwar Ghat facing the temple's eastern entrance is the most sacred, while Uddhav, Datta and Amalnerkar ghats are particularly busy during the Wari season. The ghats transform completely during Ashadhi and Kartiki Ekadashi when hundreds of thousands of Warkaris converge in a spectacle of mass devotion.
