Chaumukha Temple Palitana

A 17th-century Jain temple with a four-faced Adinath image visible from all cardinal directions.

Chaumukha Temple in the Chaumukhji Tonk on Shatrunjaya Hill was built in 1616 CE by Jain merchant Setthi Devaraj and is one of the most impressive structures on the hill. The temple is named for its four-faced Adinath murti on a white marble pedestal, each face turned to one of the cardinal directions to symbolise the omnipresence of the Tirthankara. The imposing gateway, richly carved marble veranda with figures of musicians and dancers, and the subsidiary shrines to Gomukha and Chakreshvari make it a centrepiece of the Palitana visit. The carving quality here is considered among the finest on the hill.
