Idumban Temple sits atop Idumban Hills and honours the demon turned devotee said to have carried the Sivagiri and Sakthigiri hills to this spot on the orders of sage Agastya. After his defeat in battle with Murugan, Idumban became one of the deity's guardian figures, and pilgrims visiting Palani traditionally pay respects here as part of the wider temple circuit associated with the main hill shrine.
