Kalpathy is an agraharam established around 1425 AD when Tamil Brahmin families settled here, and it holds the distinction of being Kerala's first officially recognised heritage village. Its four linked settlements of Old Kalpathy, New Kalpathy, Chathapuram, and Govindarajapuram are lined with row houses that share walls in a distinct Dravidian style, opening onto narrow lanes still used for daily rituals. The Vishwanatha Swamy Temple anchors the village and hosts the annual Kalpathy Ratholsavam chariot festival, one of Kerala's most striking temple processions.
