Ram Raja Temple began as a palace before an idol of Rama, brought from Ayodhya by Queen Ganesh Kunwari, refused to be moved to its intended shrine. The building was consecrated as a temple on the spot, and Rama has since been worshipped here as the ruling king of Orchha, complete with a police guard of honour and a gun salute each day. It remains the spiritual centre of the town and draws the largest crowds of any Orchha site.
