Raja Mahal

The oldest palace in the Orchha Fort complex, known for its vividly painted royal chambers and murals.

Raja Mahal was begun in the 1530s by Rudra Pratap Singh and completed under his descendants, making it the earliest of the three palaces in the fort quadrangle. Its plain exterior gives way to richly painted interiors, especially in the Diwan-e-Aam and Diwan-e-Khas halls, where murals in vivid natural pigments have survived centuries largely intact. The palace offers a quieter, less crowded counterpoint to Jahangir Mahal next door.
