Pykara Lake and Falls

A serene reservoir and waterfall complex 19 km from Ooty set in shola forest, sacred to the indigenous Toda community, with boating on the lake and impressive falls during and after monsoon.

Pykara Lake and Falls lies 19 km from Ooty along the Ooty-Gudalur Road. The Pykara River, which feeds the reservoir and cascades downstream through dense shola forest, holds sacred significance for the Toda tribe - the indigenous pastoral community of the Nilgiris.

Tamil Nadu Tourism operates boat services on the lake. The falls are most impressive between July and October when flow is at its peak. The surrounding area is good for wildlife sightings including gaur, spotted deer, and Nilgiri bird species. Best visited October to June; check boat service availability before visiting.
