Mudumalai National Park and Tiger Reserve lies in the Nilgiri hills of Tamil Nadu, where the state meets Karnataka and Kerala. Its 321 sq km core of moist and dry deciduous forest, drained by the Moyar river, is part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve and was declared a tiger reserve in 2007. Elephants, gaur, tigers, leopards, wild dogs and more than 260 bird species are recorded here.

Theppakadu, on the Ooty to Mysuru road, is the main visitor area, with the Forest Department reception, safari vans and the elephant camp. Masinagudi, just outside the park, has many private lodges. Check current safari timings and fees with the Tamil Nadu Forest Department before you go.

  • How to Reach: From Ooty, take the Kalhatti ghat road down to Masinagudi and Theppakadu, about 35 km. The road from Mysuru via Bandipur also reaches Theppakadu.
