Satmatrika Temples

A 10th-century group of Paramara shrines dedicated to the seven mother goddesses at the river confluence.

Satmatrika Temples are a group of 10th-century shrines about 6 km from Omkareshwar on the southern bank of the Narmada, dedicated to the Saptamatrika, the seven mother goddesses: Maheshwari, Varahi, Brahmi, Indrani, Narasimhi, Koumari and Chamunda. The cluster displays the characteristic Paramara style of stone carving, with detailed sculpture panels and architectural elements that remain impressive despite the effects of time. The confluence setting adds ritual significance to the site.
