Gauri Somnath Temple

An 11th-century Bhumija-style star-shaped temple housing a 6-foot black stone Shivalinga.

Gauri Somnath Temple on Mandhata Island dates to the 11th century and was constructed by the Parmar dynasty in the Bhumija style, its plan taking the shape of a star or peahen when seen from above. The three-storeyed structure houses one of the largest Shivalingas in Omkareshwar, a six-foot black stone linga with a Nandi positioned before the sanctum. Idols of Goddess Parvati and Shiva stand behind the main linga. The temple was later partially restored by the Marathas and is protected by the state archaeology department.
