Pinakini Satyagraha Ashram

Pinakini Satyagraha Ashram

A Gandhi-founded ashram on the banks of the Penna near Nellore, remembered locally as the Dakshina Sabarmati of the freedom struggle.

Pinakini Satyagraha Ashram was founded by Mahatma Gandhi on the banks of the Penna River in 1921, on twenty-two acres donated for the cause. Gandhi inaugurated the ashram in person, and it grew into a centre for khadi production, rural upliftment, and nonviolent resistance during the freedom struggle. Locals still refer to it as the Dakshina Sabarmati, second only to Gandhi's own ashram on the Sabarmati river. The Indian Red Cross Society maintains the site today.
