Rajsamand Lake, about 17 km from Nathdwara near the town of Rajsamand, is one of the largest man-made lakes in Rajasthan, built between 1662 and 1676 by Maharana Raj Singh I of Mewar by damming the Gomati River. The lake's northern embankment, called Nauchowki, is lined with nine elaborately carved marble pavilions and bears the Raj Prashasti, one of the longest Sanskrit inscriptions in the world running over 25 slabs and narrating Mewar's history. The lake and its marble ghats offer a serene and photogenic setting, particularly at sunset.
