Eklingji Temple in the town of Eklingji, about 22 km from Nathdwara, is a complex of 108 temples centred on the principal shrine of Eklingji, the four-faced black marble Shivalinga worshipped as the presiding deity of the Mewar Rajputs since the 8th century. Founded by Bappa Rawal, the founder of the Mewar dynasty, the present double-storeyed temple with its pyramidal roof, carved exterior and silver doors was built under later Mewar rulers. The complex also houses shrines to Goddess Durga, the Sun God and other deities, and a beautiful silver Nandi stands before the main linga. Mewar's rulers considered themselves servants of Eklingji rather than independent sovereigns.
