Trimbakeshwar Temple

One of the twelve Jyotirlingas near Nashik, unique for housing a three-faced lingam representing Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva, located near the origin of the sacred Godavari River.

Trimbakeshwar Temple near Nashik is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva and one of the most significant pilgrimage sites in Maharashtra. The temple is unique among all Jyotirlingas for housing a three-faced lingam representing Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva, a form known as the Trimurti Linga. Located in the town of Trimbak in the Nashik district, at the foot of the Brahmagiri mountain, the temple sits near the origin of the sacred Godavari River, the longest river in peninsular India. The current temple was built by the Peshwa Balaji Baji Rao (Nana Saheb) in the 18th century using black stone, and is a fine example of Hemadpanthi architecture. Trimbakeshwar is also one of the four venues for the Kumbh Mela, known here as the Simhastha Kumbh, held every twelve years. The town holds significant importance in the Nashik pilgrimage circuit, and devotees traditionally visit Trimbakeshwar before proceeding to the temples at Panchavati.
