Pawapuri Jal Mandir

A white marble temple on a lotus pond marking the spot where Lord Mahavira attained nirvana.

Pawapuri Jal Mandir stands on a still lotus filled pond roughly 19 kilometres from Nalanda, built on the site where Lord Mahavira, the last Jain Tirthankara, is believed to have attained nirvana. The white marble structure appears to float above the water, reached by a stone causeway, and draws Jain pilgrims from across India. Its national religious significance justifies the slightly longer distance from the Nalanda ruins.
