Naina Peak, locally known as China Peak, is the highest point in the Nainital area at 2,611 metres (8,568 feet). It offers the most expansive views available from the Nainital region - sweeping panoramas of snow-capped Himalayan ranges, the Naini Lake far below, and the Kumaon valley stretching to the plains.
The trek to Naina Peak from Nainital town covers approximately 6 km and takes 3 to 4 hours one way through dense oak and rhododendron forest. The path passes through Cheena village and offers wildlife sightings including Himalayan birds and occasionally leopards. It is a full-day excursion and requires reasonable fitness.
Best trekked between October and June. Carry warm clothing as temperatures at the summit are significantly cooler than town. An early morning start gives the best chance of clear Himalayan views before clouds build.
