Ahhichatragarh, the fort of the hooded cobra, covers about 36 acres in the centre of Nagaur. It was neglected until the 1980s and has been restored since 1985 by the Mehrangarh Museum Trust. Inside are palaces of the Rathore and Mughal periods, a network of water channels, fountains and baths, and some fine wall paintings. The restoration won a UNESCO Asia-Pacific Heritage Award in 2002 and was shortlisted for the Aga Khan Award for Architecture. The fort hosts the World Sacred Spirit Festival.
