Bandipur National Park covers about 1,456 sq km of dry and moist deciduous forest in Chamarajanagar district of Karnataka, between Mysuru and the Nilgiris. It became a tiger reserve under Project Tiger in 1973 and is part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve, joining Nagarhole, Mudumalai and Wayanad in one of India's largest forest landscapes. Elephants, tigers, leopards, wild dogs, gaur and many birds live here.

The Karnataka Forest Department runs jeep and bus safaris from the Bandipur reception on the Mysuru to Ooty highway, and the highway through the park is closed to traffic at night. Book safaris through the Forest Department and check current timings before you travel, as they are not listed here.

  • How to Reach: Bandipur is about 80 km south of Mysuru on the Mysuru to Ooty highway via Gundlupet. Mysuru has the nearest railway station.
