George Everest's House, known as Park Estate, is the ruined hilltop residence of Sir George Everest, the Surveyor General of India from 1830 to 1843 after whom Mount Everest was named. Situated about 6 km from Gandhi Chowk at an altitude of around 2,000 metres, Everest used this estate as his base for conducting the Great Trigonometrical Survey of India - one of the most ambitious geographical projects of the 19th century.
The estate is now largely in ruins but has been partially restored and opened as a heritage site. It sits on the edge of a ridge offering dramatic views in two directions - the Doon Valley and Aglar River valley on one side, and the snow-capped Himalayan ranges on the other.
The site is popular for photography, picnics, and the historical connection. A 2 km walk from the parking area reaches the estate. Best visited in the morning for Himalayan views.
