First built by Portuguese missionaries in 1534, St Michael's Church in Mahim is one of the oldest standing churches in Mumbai. It is best known today for its Wednesday novena services, which pull in huge crowds, including many non Christians who come to pray for their wishes. Inside, the church holds a marble statue of Christ and an image of Our Lady of Perpetual Succour that devotees consider especially powerful. Despite its long history, the current structure is fairly simple, so most visitors come for the atmosphere and the novena rather than for grand architecture.
