Global Vipassana Pagoda

A giant golden dome in Gorai built for Buddhist meditation, with the world's largest pillar free stone dome.

The Global Vipassana Pagoda stands near Gorai Creek in northwest Mumbai, modelled on Myanmar's Shwedagon Pagoda. Built without any supporting pillars using an old stone interlocking technique, its dome holds a meditation hall that can seat up to 8,000 people at once. The structure enshrines relics of the Buddha and also has smaller galleries showing his life and teachings. Reaching it usually means a short ferry ride from Gorai jetty, which adds a bit of an adventure to the visit, and it pairs naturally with a day trip to nearby Esselworld.
