Achaleshwar Mahadev Temple, believed to date to the 9th century, sits just outside Achalgarh Fort about 11 km from Mount Abu. It is one of only a handful of temples in India where the toe of Lord Shiva is the principal object of worship, with a deep pit in the sanctum believed to extend to the netherworld. A four-tonne Nandi idol crafted from five metals stands at the entrance. Three sculpted stone buffaloes stand beside the adjacent Mandakini Lake, connected to a legend of demons slain by a Rajput king.
