The oldest market in Mirzapur, established in the early 19th century and named after Lord Marquess Wellesley, the British East India Company Governor-General who initiated the city's commercial development from the adjacent Bariya Ghat. As Mirzapur grew into a major inland trading centre for cotton, silk, brass, and carpets, Wellesleyganj became its commercial core. Today it remains a busy neighbourhood market for apparel, daily goods, and general retail, carrying a layered British-era character that few visitors explore.
